The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the intention behind this extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites should be developed to be opened flawlessly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have raised some questions given the fact that the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
