Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain extension is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to order john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained working.
